SUMMARY:Foreign Bodies, Intimate Ecologies: Transformations in Environmental History
CREATED:20151128T142522Z

DESCRIPTION:Environmental history has experienced significant transformations in recent years, driven by a new sense of urgency created by contemporary environmental crises and greater degrees of interdisciplinary engagement. This international symposium engages with these recent trends and transformations that all point towards the need for environmental historians (and those in related fields) to cross established boundaries: temporal, geographical, cultural and disciplinary. It seeks to bring together new research from all periods and regions that address three related themes: borders, space and scale; conflict and contestation; and methods and interdisciplinarity. We particularly welcome proposals that address the following questions:\N\NHow do more-than-human histories reframe questions of boundaries and scale? And how do they connect the bodily, local and regional with the global or planetary?\NCan intimate histories of people and environments bring new perspectives to landscapes and waterscapes with contested values? How have particular places and their non-human inhabitants shaped these contestations?\NIn answering these questions, what perspectives can environmental history usefully draw from other humanities disciplines as well as the social and natural sciences?\N\N Keynote speakers:\NDr Vinita Damodaran (University of Sussex, UK)\NProf. Tom Griffiths (The Australian National University)\NDr Dolly Jørgensen (Luleå Technical University, Sweden)

DESCRIPTION:2016 conference - Seattle, WA\N\NEnvironmental History and Its Publics - March 30-April 3, 2016\N\N Located on the shores of the Salish Sea and surrounded by lakes and rivers, Seattle’s location serves as an evocative site to consider fluid and interdisciplinary themes in environmental history, with their commensurate ebb and flow of natures, peoples, ideas, goods, and microbes. The region is likewise home to powerful global corporations, including Boeing, Starbucks, Amazon, and Microsoft, ones that not only influence our interaction with the natural world but also provide an opportunity for historians to promote policy and decision-making beyond traditional academic venues. With a multitude of threats facing today’s environment and the diverse people who depend on it, historians need to find the venues and craft the vocabularies necessary for reaching new audiences and contributing to knowledge making with direct applicability.\N\N For this reason, the theme of Seattle’s conference will be “Environmental History and Its Publics.” Environmental history has grown over the past decade, especially on the international level, and is now poised to engage multiple publics who can benefit from the field’s interdisciplinary approach. To reach these new audiences, environmental historians must begin to retool their message and methodologies to push society beyond its fixation on the present with a deeper understanding of the past so that better decisions can be made to shape the future of human and nonhuman life on Earth.

SUMMARY:The International Meeting “Wood and Charcoal: Approaches from Archaeology, Archaeobotany, Ethnography and History” (Braga, 15-16 April)

DESCRIPTION:The International Meeting “Wood and Charcoal: Approaches from Archaeology, Archaeobotany, Ethnography and History” is organised by Lab2Pt and the University of Minho, and will take place in Braga (Portugal) from 15-16 April. It is focused on the study of wood and charcoal from archaeological, archaeobotanical, ethnographic and historical approaches. Wood was in the past a key material and was used in many different ways in the day-to-day life. Domestic, artisanal and ritual tools, weapons, structures, buildings, log-boats, ships, carts, etc. were made of wood. It was also crucial for the developing of rituals and ceremonies. One of the main goals of this Meeting is to give visibility to this ephemeral material that made part in the past of all the spheres of life. The approaches to the study of wood –and also to charcoal- would be made since disciplines such as Archaeology, Archaeobotany, Ethnography and History with strong interrelations between them. The Meeting would include conferences lectured by recognised experts besides to short-communications and a poster-session, ending with a round-table.

DESCRIPTION:Co-Sponsored by the Center for Ecological History, Renmin University of China, and the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society, Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich, Germany\NThis conference is open to advanced graduate students and early postdocs, regardless of department, discipline, or country. The purpose of the conference is to provide promising, but inexperienced scholars an opportunity to present their work in progress (e.g., a chapter from a dissertation) before an international group of peers and a panel of senior mentors in the field.\NOur theme is meant to be broad and inclusive. We will consider topics from any period of history or any part of the world. But especially we want to include new research on how societies, large or small, have transformed the natural world around them materially and in the process have changed their own structure, views of the world, or social-economic relations. In other words, we are interested in exploring the dynamics of reciprocal change. Studies of ideology or cultural attitudes are welcome, but only if they include the material dimensions of social/ecological transformation.

SUMMARY:XI Iberian Conference on Rural Studies (XI CIER 2016)
CREATED:20160220T123140Z
DTSTAMP:20160220T123140Z
URL:http://xicier2016.utad.pt
DESCRIPTION:The XI CIER 2016Iberian Conference on Rural Studies13 to 15 October 2016\N \NThe Portuguese Society of Rural Studies (SPER), the Spanish Association of Agricultural Economics (AEEA), and the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) through the Centre for Transdisciplinary Development Studies (CETRAD), in partnership with the Spanish Association of Geographers,(AGE), the Groups of Rural and Food Sociology from the Spanish Federation of Sociology (FES), the Rural Studies Network (RER , Brazil), the Spanish Society of Agrarian History (SEHA) and the Brazilian Society of Economics, Business and Rural Sociology ( SOBER ) will host here in Vila Real (Portugal) between the 13th and 15th of October 2016 the  eleventh edition of the Iberian Conference on Rural Studies.\N \NThe Iberian Conference on Rural Studies has been carried out since 1988 through a partnership with AEEA and SPER. The CIER is a consolidated space of multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary discussion on the identification and analysis of the challenges and opportunities arising from the specificity and diversity of rural areas. It joins academics, researchers, experts and professionals from various disciplinary fields and promotes the interaction between theoretical and practical knowledge, contributing to the construction of transdisciplinary knowledge. The CIER is a global debating space, given the increasing participation of other "geographies", in particular with ones which have historical and cultural ties with the Iberian Peninsula, the Latin America and Portuguese speaking countries (PALOP).\N \NThe theme of the Conference ─ Smart and Inclusive Development in Rural Areas ─ aims to promote the discussion and the analysis of ideas, proposals and results of research and actual experiences already obtained on the applicability and implementation of the smart growth agenda and the sustainable and inclusive development in rural areas with different geographical and socio-cultural contexts, especially in Europe and Latin America.\N \NAre there multiple issues raised by the Conference theme? What is smart growth? Is it convergent with sustainable and inclusive development? Does smart specialisation strategies offer a solution to promote development based on local knowledge and specificities? And if so, what type of rural areas? Does it pose risks for increasing marginalisation of peripheral rural areas? If so, how to prevent it? The XI CIER will be an opportunity to debate these questions by academics, researchers, students, politicians, technicians and other persons interested in the past, present and future of rural areas.

SUMMARY:KNOWING NATURE: The Changing Foundations of Environmental Knowledge
CREATED:20161102T123049Z
DTSTAMP:20161102T123049Z

DESCRIPTION:Co-Sponsored by the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society, Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich, and the Center for Ecological History, Renmin University of China, Beijing, with the collaboration of the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin\NWho knows nature best? Over the past 10,000 years competing communities of knowledge have evolved, each with formalized standards and processes. Peasants have competed against craftsmen, religious leaders, and urban experts. In modern societies based on science and technology, the claims to knowledge have changed even more dramatically, although scientific knowledge still competes with other bodies of knowledge. And always, who gets to define knowledge can have profound consequences for the natural world. For our conference we seek proposals that examine what has been seen and understood as measurable, speculative, safe or unsafe and how scale (of landscapes, research projects etc.) can affect knowledge production. We welcome proposals on the rise of new fields of knowledge about nature and the environment and their search for disciplinary and institutional stability. Our conference will seek to move beyond simple dichotomies (modernity vs. tradition, science vs. religion, folk wisdom vs. urban ignorance), to develop comparisons that cross national boundaries, and to bring neglected parts of the globe and time into view. Our keynote speaker will be Dagmar Schäfer, managing director of the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin, and author of The Crafting of the 10,000 Things: Knowledge and Technology in Seventeenth-Century China (University of Chicago Press, 2011). This conference is open to all ranks of scholars, from graduate students to senior professors. Paper proposals should be one-page long (or about 300 words) and include a title and a one- or two-page CV.\NSend proposals to conference secretary Agnes Kneitz, Assistant Professor of History at Renmin University at this address: a.kneitz@ruc.edu.cn. The deadline for consideration is 1 January 2017.\NSuccessful proposals will be announced around 1 February, and complete drafts of papers (minimum of 5,000 words in English or the equivalent in Chinese characters) will be required by 1 May 2017. All papers will be circulated to the participants in advance and will not be orally presented during the conference.\NThe members of the selection committee include Mingfang Xia, Director of the Center for Ecological History and Senior Professor in the School of History, Renmin University of China; Helmuth Trischler, Head of Research at the Deutsches Museum, Munich, and Co-Director of the Rachel Carson Center; and Donald Worster, Hall Distinguished Professor of History Emeritus, University of Kansas, and Distinguished Foreign Expert, Renmin University. The organizing chairperson for the conference is Professor Shen Hou, Deputy Director of the Center for Ecological History and Associate Professor of history at Renmin University. Travel expenses for scholars living outside of China will be reimbursed by the Rachel Carson Center. Scholars living within China should depend on their own universities for covering travel expenses. For all participants, hotel accommodations for four nights and all meals will be covered by Renmin University of China. Following the conference we will organize a group field trip to the Great Wall as a site and symbol of what Joseph Needham called “science and civilization in China.”\NPlease contact Dr. Agnes Kneitz if you have any questions: Assistant Professor Renmin University of China a.kneitz@ruc.edu.cn
